Ewan, who is from Birdham, won the regional award after finishing in top spot at the south west regional heat, which was held at Bridgwater College in Somerset on Wednesday 13 January.

Working alongside other aspiring plumbers, he had six hours to complete a challenging task which included installing and hanging two radiators, and connecting them to a boiler using pipework to meet a specified design.

As well as completing the job, the apprentices were also judged on their soldering and keeping their work environment clean and tidy.

Ewan, who is working at Clarkes Services Ltd while completing a Level 2 apprenticeship in plumbing with the college, said: “It was challenging, but I really enjoyed it and to win was brilliant.

“I was surprised, but it’s a really good feeling. It has given me a lot more confidence.

“I was feeling nervous before the day, but there was a really good atmosphere – even though we were competing against each other, we all got on really well.

“I’m looking forward to the final.”

Ewan will be competing against apprentices from around the country at the national final, which will be held in Cheltenham in April.

Apart from being crowned UK Heating Apprentice of the Year, the winner is set to walk away with a prize worth £5,000 donated by the competition’s platinum sponsor Adey.

The national competition is organised every year by HIP Magazine for level 2 or 3 students who are doing an apprenticeship.

Nigel King, a plumbing lecturer at Chichester College, said: “Ewan has worked extremely hard throughout his apprenticeship so far, both in the classroom and at work.

“To see how far he has come is brilliant and he thoroughly deserved this win.

“He was methodical as he set about working on the task set, followed the brief and worked hard to complete it within the allotted time. We are very proud of him.”

Shelagh Legrave OBE, Chichester College Principal, added: “What a fantastic way to start 2016. I am absolutely delighted for Ewan and our team here at Chichester College.

“This is a wonderful achievement and one that Ewan, his lecturers and employer should be very proud of.”
