Founded in 1901, Brighton & Hove Albion played their early professional football in the Southern League before being elected to the Football League in 1920.

The club enjoyed greatest prominence between 1979 and 1983 when they played in the First Division and reached the final of the FA Cup in 1983, losing to Manchester United in a replay.

Mismanagement brought the Seagulls close to relegation from the Football League to the Conference which they narrowly avoided in 1997 and 1998. A boardroom takeover saved the club from liquidation in 1997 and only returned to Withdean stadium in 1999 following two seasons ground sharing with Gillingham. Returning to Withdean brought successive promotions and landed the Albion in the second tier of English football in 2002.

Following a 13 year battle the football club was successful in their campaign to build a £93million Stadium based at Falmer. The American Express Community Stadium was completed for the start of 2011/12 Season. After a fantastic first season, the Amex Stadium has undergone an expansion project which has increased capacity to 30,000.
