Goodwood_The estateThe Estate

For two hundred years, friends and guests have been coming to Goodwood to enjoy horseracing, motor racing, golf, flying, shooting and cricket. All of which have been introduced by enthusiastic family members. Goodwood hosts the internationally famous Festival of Speed, Goodwood Revival and Glorious Goodwood. Three of the largest events in the British sporting and social calendar.

Goodwood has been at the heart of the English summer season for at least 200 years, and has been unique in introducing new events to the calendar.

Within its 12,000 acres Goodwood is home to the largest lowlands organic farm in England, a famous Battle of Britain airfield and the oldest ground on which the written rules of cricket were played.

Members' Meeting

The Goodwood Members' Meeting is a private, invitation-only weekend of motor racing action and fabulous entertainment, run exclusively for the members of the 5000-strong Goodwood Road Racing Club and their guests, plus a single presenting partner.

Goodwood's competitions team use their unrivaled experience and global contacts to create world-class grids of significant racing cars. Over the course of the weekend, guests enjoy relentless close-fought action on the track, colourful paddocks full of rare and valuable racing cars plus a series of memorable demonstrations from the rarified worlds of Formula 1, Le Mans and beyond.

It is a weekend of shared passions and enthusiasm, enjoyed by a group of like-minded friends without any intrusion from sponsors or the general public.

Festival of Speed

In the summer of 1936, the then Earl of March, better known as racing driver and Brooklands winner, Freddie March, staged a private hillclimb for the Lancia Car Club on the winding road in front of Goodwood House. In the winter of 1992, his grandson, the present Earl of March, recreated that motorsport event and so, the following summer, the Festival of Speed made its debut on the British social and sporting calendar.

Now the largest and greatest celebration of car culture in the world, the Festival of Speed, uniquely supported by the current F1 teams, attracts the most famous and accomplished drivers, in the world’s rarest and most exotic machinery, to compete up Goodwood’s legendary 1.16 mile hill.

Horseracing

There has been horseracing on the Harroway on the South Downs above Goodwood, since 1801 when the third Duke of  Richmond held a private race meeting for the Sussex Militia. The event was such a success that the following year he held Goodwood’s first public race meeting.

From those early days, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ (as Raceweek became known) has become a firm fixture in the English summer season, when the world’s greatest horses, jockeys and trainers battle it out for the honours at what is for many people, the most beautiful and atmospheric racecourse in the world.

Goodwood Revival

The Goodwood Motor Circuit began life as a wartime airfield and played a major part in the Battle of Britain. At the end of the Second World War, the airfield’s perimeter track became the racing circuit that we know today. Thanks to the ninth Duke of Richmond’s passion for motorsport Goodwood was the scene of many great race meetings and played host to some of the greatest and most famous drivers of all time before it closed in 1966.

On the 18th September 1998, exactly 50 years to the day of its original opening, the present Earl of March reopened the circuit with a three day event now known as the Goodwood Revival. This has since become not only the most important and celebrated historic motor race meeting in the world but is also the only major sporting event to take place completely to a period theme – it is an extraordinary and magical step back in time.

The Kennels

Once housing the Duke of Richmond’s hunting hounds, The Kennels is the central clubhouse for all of the estate’s sporting and social memberships.

The Kennels is the home of Sporting Membership at Goodwood.

The Goodwood Hotel

Set in the heart of the Goodwood Estate, our luxury hotel is the perfect balance of award winning dining, stylish rooms and 21st century technology. The hotel is home to 91 rooms & suites, and guests of the hotel can also make use of the adjoining health club and spa facilities.

Golf at Goodwood

Golf At Goodwood provides a completely different and innovative way of enjoying the game. It is golf as it should be: simple, flexible and accessible.

Whether you are new to the game, play every day or once in a while, you will enjoy all the benefits you would expect from an exceptional golf environment but without the annual costs associated usually associated with a traditional club.

Goodwood House

Goodwood, one of the finest country houses in England, has been the home of the Dukes of Richmond & Lennox for over 300 years. The 1st Duke of Richmond was the natural son of King Charles II and his French mistress, Louise de Keroualle. He originally bought Goodwood as a hunting lodge and subsequent Dukes enlarged the existing Jacobean house to create the magnificent house that we see today, set in mature parkland against the backdrop of the Sussex Downs.

Aviation

Goodwood Aerodrome was built during the Second World War by the Royal Air Force as a relief landing ground for nearby RAF Tangmere.

Open to members and visiting pilots throughout the year, facilities at the Goodwood Aerodrome include aircraft refuelling, clearing customs, on-site engineering and maintenance support, hangarage and outdoor parking, flying tuition and flight experiences. Whether you are flying into Goodwood to watch the horse or motor racing, to attend to local business, or if you simply want to immerse yourself in the rich ambience of the airfield and enjoy the delights of the Aero Club Café, a warm welcome awaits you.

Home Farm

Set at the heart of the 12,000 acre Sussex Estate, Goodwood Home Farm is the largest lowland organic farm in the UK. Goodwood Home Farm achieved full organic status in 2004 and boasts the first dairy herd to be totally organically fed in this country.

The Goodwood Season

At Goodwood, sport is not just a passion or a tradition, it is quite simply our life. The Goodwood Sporting Calendar encompasses some of the most exciting events in the world; many are major highlights of the English summer season.

Throughout the year, sport dominates the landscape of the Estate. For 300 years, the Dukes of Richmond have raced their horses and played cricket in the summer months, while in the winter, they shot. Today, with the addition of motorsport, golf and flying, we enjoy an extravagance of choice.
