While London has historically been hailed as the tech capital of the UK, the combination of sky-high living prices, housing costs and jam-packed public transport networks are driving tech professionals in droves to transfer their skills to regional tech hubs across the UK.

In light of this shift, Search Technology & Transformation has singled out Brighton as the next best option for industry specialists looking to relocate from the capital, predicting a boom in growth to what is already a buoyant and thriving regional tech market.

According to Tech Nation, the national network for ambitious tech entrepreneurs, Brighton is where ‘the arts fuse with technology’. It estimates that over 14,300 vacancies opened up in the seaside haven in 2017, with approximately 13,000 people now employed in digital jobs.

Meanwhile, research published in Business Matters – the UK’s leading SME business magazine shows that approximately one in five tech employees are considering an exodus from London to regional tech hubs where they can enjoy a better quality of life, lower living costs and more affordable housing.

According to the data, the primary reasons behind why London tech workers would consider a move from the capital to a regional city are:

Quality of life (64%)
Lower living costs (51%)
Affordability of housing (47%)
Higher disposable income (45%)

Given significant growth within Brighton’s tech landscape, Search Technology & Transformation has named ‘London by the Sea’ as an emerging hub for recruitment within the sector, citing a host of opportunities for growth on the horizon.

Matt Novis, Divisional Manager at Search Technology & Transformation in Brighton, said: “This city is characterised by its vibrant creativity and collaborative nature, which makes for a unique and alternative take on technology as a whole.”

“Home to a wide range of digital advertising and marketing agencies, design studios and gaming studios, Brighton continues to develop and grow across the tech spectrum. As such, there is a wealth of opportunities for professionals who wish to propel their careers within the sector whilst enjoying an excellent quality of life. “

“Brighton is a city where creativity, ambition and entrepreneurship thrive, which is undoubtedly why we have multiple SMEs and digital agencies cropping up at every corner to disrupt the tech giants, along with the cities which host them. Given the wealth of existing and emerging opportunities, I can truly say that it’s an exciting time to be a tech recruiter in Brighton.”
