How to job search effectively
Searching for a new job isn’t easy.
Whether you’re already employed but looking for a fresh start, or you're looking to get back into work, finding the time and energy to focus on your job search can be tricky.
To help, we’ve put together a few simple steps you can take to free up your time, stay focused and ensure your job search is as effective as it can be…
1. Know what you’re looking for
This doesn’t mean you have to have the exact job at the exact company in mind, it’s more a case of understanding things in term of what you want to do, how it matches your ambitions and the type of role you’ll excel in.
Knowing exactly what you’re looking for is central to your success. By being clear on your end destination, you can plan a route map to get you there.
Rather than applying for anything and everything, a smaller number of well-considered, suitable applications will increase your chances of landing an interview.
2. Prepare properly
Making sure your CV, LinkedIn and any other supporting information is up to date is time well worth spending.
You can also create a number of varied CVs so that you can easily adjust and tailor them depending on the role you’re applying for.
3. Avoid procrastination
Avoid distractions where possible and treat your approach to your job search as if it’s a job.
Turn off your phone, TV, and tablet before you begin to avoid interruptions. Or, if you’re pushed for time, why not spend your commute or lunch break researching relevant companies and suitable roles?
4. Dedicate time to apply for jobs
As we said at the top of the article, this can be tough, but it's important to ensure you find the time to dedicate to your search.
If you’re productive in the mornings, try getting up a little earlier to start searching. Or, if you can free up some extra time in the evenings in then try this route. It’s important to find what works for you and then be consistent and disciplined.
5. Only go for the ‘ideal’ job roles
You’ll save yourself time if you only apply for the positions you have a genuine interest in and that match your skillset and ambitions.
Taking more time and care to submit a few, well-considered applications will be more beneficial and give you the best chance of landing your next role quicker than if you simply churn out a large number of hurried ones.
6. Make a note of the jobs you apply to
There are several reasons why it’s important to track your applications.
Firstly, you won't accidentally apply to a job twice on another platform/job board. Secondly, you’ll be able to follow up with the employer if you haven’t heard back and thirdly, it’s a good way of visualising your efforts and allows you to track which platforms and approach work best for you.
