Questions to ask yourself before your next big career move
At one time or another, we’ve all faced a crossroads in our career.
It might be that we want to simply change jobs, pursue a new career path, or find our true calling in life…
Whatever the reason, asking yourself a few key questions about your career and the path you’re heading down is a great way to determine whether it’s the right time to take the next step.
To guide you, we’ve suggested several questions to ask yourself that can help you explore the future opportunities you want to pursue:
1. Do I like what I’m doing right now?
You spend so much of your time working, it’s important try and find yourself a role that you can enjoy as much as possible.
If you find that you’re in a position or business that you don’t enjoy, you don’t have to make a change right away, but thinking this way does indicate it might be worth your while to begin actively working toward finding a new job.
2. What are my strengths?
It’s time to give yourself a little credit where it's due!
What are your strengths?" is a very common interview question and it’s a great question to ask yourself. Think about what hard skills, soft skills, and personality traits set you apart in your personal and professional life and whether you’re utilising them to the best of your ability where you are.
3. What would I change about my career tomorrow if I could?
If you can picture what you would change about your career and create small, medium and large goals to get there then that’s a good step forward.
The fixes you want to make to your career might be really small but can be completely transformative.
4. What does my ideal work-life balance look like?
This is one of the most important questions that can be tough to answer honestly. As lifelong professionals, we become bogged down in salaries, job titles, job security, and everything that comes with financial security.
However, if we've learned anything in the past few years, it's that work-life balance is incredibly important. Does your current career offer you the flexibility to live outside the office?
5. What opportunities does my current role offer me?
If your career feels like it has nowhere to go, it might be time to explore new options.
You should also be honest with yourself when answering this question. Maybe your career has "nowhere" to go, and you're perfectly happy with that right now.
It’s also important to embrace the role that feels like it’s taking you on a realistic career trajectory rather than striving for a dream career that’s out of reach.
6. What are my main priorities?
As your progress through your career, it's important to take stock of your own shifting priorities. Your career goals rarely are the same as they were when you were starting out.
Consider what your priorities are now and how they might change and use this as the foundational inspiration for pursuing the career that suits your life in the future.
