Evening IPU Reception Volunteer

The Inpatient Unit at Martlets is a warm and friendly place, with 18 beds providing end of life care for men and women suffering from cancer and other complex diseases. This role sits within the Inpatient Unit reception and supports the work of the Ward Clerks and nursing staff.

Where: In Patient Unit Martlets Hospice, Wayfield Avenue, Hove BN3 7LW

When: Evenings 5pm-8pm & bank cover

Usual minimum commitment: A regular weekly or fortnightly shift

What you’ll be doing

  • To greet visitors, ensure they sign in and out and escort visitors onto the ward when appropriate
  • Answer and transfer calls, use the computer, photocopier and fax
  • Receive and process donations and payments for visitor meals
  • Occasionally organise volunteer drivers and ambulances
  • Deal with requests from the clinical team
  • Book nurse shifts when requested
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times

Your skills and abilities:

  • Previous reception experience would be an advantage, but training will be given
  • Good communication skills and confidence using a computer 
  • Be empathetic, caring and aware of the impact of bereavement
  • Ability to work independently and seek guidance when required
  • To have a non-judgemental, emotionally mature approach
  • To be resilient to the nature of Hospice care and self-aware of the emotional aspects of this role.

Expectations:  

  • To commit to a regular shift
  • Induction will need to take place during different shifts to the ones you will be continuing with
  • To be sensitive to the needs of patients and family and maintain confidentiality
  • To adhere to guidelines, protocols, policies and procedures of the Hospice
  • You will need to undertake a Disclosure and Barring service Check
  • Attend the Martlets Welcome Day and other relevant training.
