An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Hadoop Developer to join our in house business intelligence and analytics team in a growing and successful organisation.

Hastings Direct, a FTSE 250 listed entity, is a fast growing, agile, digitally focused general insurance provider of products and services to over 2.6 million customers in the UK, employing over 3,000 colleagues.

The Role

The role will be flexibly based between our London and Bexhill-on-sea Offices (to be agreed with successful applicant, home working will also be available). The role will be challenging but rewarding with primary responsibilities covering:

  • Interacting with our data science teams to understand and identify new data needs and requirements, working with other business functions to lead a data engineering function delivering these solutions
  • Proactively designing well engineered solutions for data ingestion, data structuring and production analytics jobs
  • Designing solution frameworks and standards
  • Implementing solutions and providing mentorship and oversight to junior team members.
  • Serving as technical lead in the evaluation and recommendation of software tools, definition of hardware requirements and system configurations working within architectural guidelines

Skills and experience

The ideal candidate will have plenty of experience working as a data engineer leveraging the Hadoop platform (ideally a Hortonworks cluster). You will have deep expertise in core Hadoop components including Hive and Spark.

You will have proven experience being the lead developer for complex data engineering projects and will confidently identify solutions to data engineering problems. You'll have excellent communication skills and will be used to working closely with data science teams to proactively understand workloads and identify where data engineering efforts can add value.

You will be focus on delivering high quality maintainable and resilient solutions to problems.

The role is not a line management role but you will be an effective technical leader who can support and mentor a wider team.

You will be enthusiastic about big data technology and problems, able to demonstrate a broad industry awareness together with continuous independent learning to keep abreast of this fast changing technology.

Experience in an insurance based industry would be an advantage but candidates from other industries with a proven ability to apply their skills to a new situations are welcome.
