Bereavement Allotment Project Volunteer

This is a role to support the Bereavement Service Allotment Project, which is running a 12-month pilot Bereavement Group for bereaved men starting in July 2018. The Men’s Bereavement Allotment Group will run 6 groups over the coming year 2018/2019, each group delivered over 6 consecutive weeks.

Where: Wayfield Avenue, Hove, BN3 7LW and Weald Allotment

When:  Mondays

The initial plan is to run the group weekly on Monday mornings 10.00 -13.00. Volunteers will be expected to start at 09.30 and finish 13.30. There will be time for a break mid-morning

Volunteers will be expected to have monthly group supervision, which will also be on a Monday

What you’ll be doing:

  • You will be providing practical support to the allotment group which will include jobs like sowing, weeding, watering, harvesting, prepping and cleaning tools and equipment, allotment maintenance
  • You will have contact with bereaved men, which may include some informal sharing of their bereavement
  • This is a new role and it is expected that tasks will be identified and develop as the project grows

Your skills and abilities:

  • To have insight and awareness of the work of a Hospice
  • To have experience of gardening and working outdoors
  • To be able to be with bereaved people who can, at times, be distressed
  • To recognise one’s own personal boundaries and limitations within the role of being a Bereavement Allotment Volunteer and liaise with BAP Counsellor and Counselling and Bereavement Service Manager
  • To have a non-judgemental and accepting approach to work
