Band 5

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) is the largest community health and care provider in Sussex. Our expert teams deliver a wide range of medical, nursing and therapeutic care to over 9,000 people a day, serving a total population of 1.3 million.

We pride ourselves in providing excellent care at the heart of the community. In July 2018, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) gave us an improved 'Good' rating, with 'Outstanding' features. 96% of our patients said they would recommend our services to their friends and family, and we attribute this to the hard work and dedication of each and every one of our teams.

We offer our staff a multitude of benefits; flexible working, free health and wellbeing checks, three tax efficient workplace nurseries rated 'Good' and 'Outstanding' by Ofsted, and a wide range of exciting learning and development opportunities including external courses, conferences, and a Graduate Studentship Scheme.

The Trust is signed up to the disability confident scheme and we guarantee to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for the vacancy.

Are you looking to expand your children's nursing portfolio of skills and expertise to deliver children's community nursing or are you a children's nurse with experience looking for a new challenge and feel that nursing in community settings is for you? If so, this could be the perfect opportunity.

This exciting and funded opportunity is offered by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) and will enable suitably qualified nurses to undertake either a BSc (Hons) or MSc in Primary and Community Care (Children's Community Nursing) Specialist Practice Award.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust is the lead provider of children's community nursing services across West Sussex and is committed to transforming into a comprehensive model of community nursing, which best meets the needs of all four groups of children and young people identified within NHS at Home (Department of Health 2011).
  1. Children with acute, short term conditions
  2. Children with long term conditions
  3. Children with complex health needs, disability and continuing care needs
  4. Children with life limiting and life threatening conditions

West Sussex covers a wide geographical area with a population of 186,300 children and young people between 0-19 years, making up around 23% of the total population.

The service is made up of:
  • Three locality Children's Community Nursing teams in the North - Crawley, South - Lancing and West - Chichester
  • The Snowdrop Care at Home Specialist Palliative Care team
  • Special School Nursing
  • Specialist Children's Continence team

Starting in September 2019 you will commence a fixed term contract with SCFT and undertake either a one year full time or two year part time course (depending on previous experience) at the University of Surrey. All educational components of the programme are based at the University of Surrey (Guildford), with your clinical placement based within one of the CCN teams within Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust. Secondment will be considered for applicants applying from within the organisation. You will be supported by an experienced team including a Mentor and Practice Teacher throughout your course.

Successful completion of the course will lead to a NMC Specialist Practice Award and either a BSc (Hons) or MSc in Primary and Community Care (Community Children's Nursing) and eligibility to apply for children's community nursing posts. Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust will endeavour to help successful applicants to find a post but are unable to guarantee posts at the end of the course.

Please carefully read the attached person specification and the job description to determine your suitability for this programme.
