The National Education Union is a force for change in the world of education, bringing together more than 450,000 teachers, lecturers, support staff and leaders working in maintained and independent schools and colleges across the UK.

Combining the expertise and experience of both the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) and the National Union of Teachers (NUT), the National Education Union is the largest education union in Europe and the fourth largest union in the Trades Union Congress (TUC). We are an effective and powerful voice – championing everyone who works in education.

The NEU is looking to recruit several Regional Development Officers to join the Union’s regional offices network. Vacancies exist in the South East, North West, Yorkshire and Humber, East Midlands and West Midlands offices.

These exciting roles are supporting the NEU with the implementation of national organising strategies to meet the key challenges faced by the Union particularly in relation to ensuring employers meet their statutory obligations in respect of section 168 of the TULR(C)Act (paid time off for reps to undertake trade union duties).

They will also work with other stakeholders towards the establishment of self-sustaining negotiation and consultation structures within the region’s academies, free schools and MATs, ensuring local democratic accountability, and support local activists in the development of branch structures and building capacity and activism at all levels of the union. A key aspect of their role will also be to recruit, develop and support new activists and representatives, including by delivering training and mentoring/coaching strategies, to ensure their engagement and empowerment.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have previous experience and knowledge of working effectively (in a paid or elected position) within a democratic membership organisation/trade union, and ideally have a good grasp of the NEU’s political, educational and legal context.

You will also need to have a good knowledge and understanding of employment law, a be proactive and who can apply their initiative and analytical skills to problem-solving, and exercise judgement when making decisions, using influencing and negotiating skills, as needed.

An excellent communicator, you will also need to have some previous experience of acting as an advocate for members at workplace or local level, frequently dealing with sensitive and difficult situations, which you will need to handle tactfully and confidentially.

Prospective applicants should be aware that these roles do entail extensive travel, regionally and nationally which may require occasional stays away from home and that having a full and valid Driving Licence is an essential requirement for the role.

We offer good conditions including a commencing salary of £34,017 pa plus a non-superannuable luncheon allowance currently set at £1,005 (pro-rata for part-time roles), 35 days annual leave plus 4 days paid additional holiday entitlement as the NEU office closure days at Christmas and a final salary pension scheme. Salary, annual leave and office closure days will be pro-rata, for part-time applicants.

We welcome applications from individuals seeking part-time, job-share or other flexible working arrangements.

Closing date is mid-day Wednesday 24th April.

Applicants are also advised that following the shortlisting process, those successful will be invited to an Assessment Centre to be held in London, which will be followed by panel interviews for those who are successful on the day.
