Due to an exciting period of growth we are looking for 2 apprentices. The apprentices will take on the role of Yard Operatives, where they will learn how to operate a forklift and a shovel loader and use them to pick and stock the wide variety of building products which D W Nye supply to the building industry.

They will also be involved with assisting trade and retail customers and unloading delivery lorries.

We would like our Apprentices to grow with the business and to learn how a merchants yard works. Once the Apprentices have a good grounding for how their role supports the business and a solid understanding of the industry, they will have the opportunity to progress into one of the many roles at D W Nye. These include moving into a Sales Role, to train as an LGV driver or to progress to the role of Yard Foreman.

Training to be Provided:

Throughout this apprenticeship Standard candidates will learn:

Warehouse practices and processes - including deliveries, dispatch, maintaining records, moving stock, packing and storing goods

using warehouse equipment, machinery and vehicles - including mechanical racking systems and materials handling equipment (MHE) such as forklifts and pallet trucks

using basic IT - including barcoding, data capture, radio and warehousing management software and systems

communicating effectively with colleagues, customers, third party carriers and other organisations

health and safety practices, procedures and regulations within a warehouse environment - including safe driving and operating techniques and working safely at heights

Candidates will be assessed within the workplace by their employer and assessor/trainer and will be supported through monthly reviews and observations of workplace competency in order to meet requirements of the Highfield Level 2 Certificate in Warehousing.

Expected Duration:

12-18 months

Skills Required:

You will need to be able to follow tasks with minimal supervision and think on your feet to understand how to overcome barriers and finish a task completely (including keeping the work area clear and presentable).

You will need to be driven to learn new things and not be afraid to get to get stuck in, 95% of your time will be spent outside.

Qualifications Required:

GCSE – English C or above

GCSE – Maths C or above

Personal Qualities:

You will need to be driven and committed to completing your apprenticeship.

You will need to be willing to communicate what areas of the merchants yard you are most interested in so we can support you every step of the way.

This is a physically demanding role involving heavy lifting and an environment which can be very busy you will need to be able to maintain a professional image at all times.

You must be able to assist customers and know when to ask for help to ensure our customers receive the best service possible.

Future Prospects:

One you’ve completed your apprenticeship D W Nye can offer you the opportunity to move into one of many roles they have to support the business including; moving into a Sales Role, training as an LGV driver (must be over 25 due to insurance) or to progress to the role of Yard Foreman with your own Apprentices!

The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.90 per hour effective from 1st April 2019. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.

D W Nye is based in a green and rural location so it is recommended that you have a car or access to a car although the number 93 bus stops close by
