Job Details

Ardingly College is seeking to appoint an individual who wishes to become a Chef to join their dynamic and highly creative team. You will be working alongside professional chefs in the creation of new dishes, and the production and service of food, while maintaining correct levels of Food Safety and Health and Safety. You will be passionate about food, and versatile in your approach to learning as you will gain experience in all sections of the kitchen - fish, pastry, butchery, main courses, veg prep, salad prep, sandwich prep etc. The College often run themed days, which enables our Chefs to cook cuisine from all over the world and be creative in compilation of menus. This provides our Chefs with the opportunity to showcase their creative flair and be involved in learning new cooking techniques to create authentic dishes. Alongside the production of meals to cater for our students and staff, we also have a large number of events that requires a different style of cooking, catering for corporate lunches, sit down three course VIP meals, wedding breakfasts, summer balls etc.

The ideal candidate for this role will have basic knowledge of food and cooking, excellent customer service skills, the ability to work as a team and follow instruction and be able work using their own initiative when required.

Polite, reliable, keen to learn.

No formal qualifications required. Candidates should be literate and numerate and have basic knowledge of food and cooking.

Future Prospects;

The potential to progress to a higher level role within the kitchen/catering team at the College, providing the roles are available and the individual has shown commitment to their apprenticeship, during their time with the College.

Transport is ideally required due to our location. Public transport (bus) routes do not run directly passed the College, but a bus stops in the Village, which is about a miles walk down to the campus. Enhanced DBS checks are required for any employees of the Colleges, and any offer will be subject to obtaining a satisfactory DBS check and references.

40 hours per week, working 5 days out of 7, for 52 weeks per year. One day per week will be a day release to College as part of the Apprenticeship requirements. The shifts are 8.5 hours between the hours of 6.30am and 7.30pm. Flexibility is also required to work major functions throughout the year.

(Please inquire and apply if you are interested but aren't able to work these full time hours, as part-time applications will be considered to a minimum of 30 hours per week).

Training to be Provided:

Commis Chef Apprenticeship Standard Level 2.

This Apprenticeship standard is designed for trainee Commis chefs who are looking to improve their knowledge and culinary skills and get a nationally recognised certification. The Commis chef will learn and understand how to carry out the basic functions in every section of the kitchen. Therefore having the opportunity to experience, consider and value each section with a view to choosing where they feel most inspired. Upon completion of the course the trainee will be able to create basic dishes using fresh and local ingredients, demonstrate competency around food hygiene while maintaining a safe kitchen environment.

18 months

Other Important Information:

The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.90 per hour. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
