Getting our communications right is key to winning the battle. And in this age of cyber warfare, it’s never been so important to have strong cyber defence. Without our Communications Engineers, we can’t do what we do. That’s why we need you.

As a Communications Engineer, you’ll carry out crucial cyber defence and maintain our voice and data communications so everyone from a front-line soldier to the General can talk to each other. You’ll become an expert in your field with specialist training on some of the Army’s most advanced technology, including our satellites, radio and computers. Variety is part and parcel of this role. You could be on a humanitarian task in a far-flung corner of the world one month and disarming explosive devices in the UK the next. Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, you’ll be surrounded by friends for life and undertaking work that helps keep the nation safe.

WORLD-CLASS TRAINING

Join us and you’ll start by learning the soldiering skills common to every member of the British Army, like outdoor survival and the safe handling of weapons. After this, you’ll head to the School of Royal Signals in Blandford to start your technical training. That means studyinginformation technology fundamentals, antenna systems and propagation, defensive cyber techniques and how to communicate using military systems. You’ll also study the management, maintenance and operation of equipment used regularly by the Royal Signals, including the setup and command of a complex digital radio detachment.

GAIN QUALIFICATIONS

The Army can help you gain a range of qualifications. These could include:

• Driving licences: B+E, C+E, D1.
• Level 2 functional skills in Maths, English and Information Technology
• BTEC Level 2 certificate in Information Communication Technology
• NVQ Level 3 as an Information Communication Technology (Professional)
• Professional registration with the Institution of Engineering and Technology or the Chartered Institute for Information Technology (BCS)

Become a Comms Engineer-Systems Operator and you’ll:

• Earn a starting salary of around £15,600 during Basic Training which will rise to £20,000 after completing 26 weeks’ training or after completing your Initial Trade Training, if less than 26 weeks.

• Regular Army age: 16.6 – 35.6 years
• Army Reserve age: 17.9 - 49.11 years

Qualifications you’ll need:

• GCSE Grade A–D/9-3 in English Language and Grade A–D/9-3 in Maths, Science or Information Technology

Fitness requirements:

• Mid-thigh pull of 94kg
• Medicine ball throw of 2.9m
• 2km run in 11min 15 sec (11 min 30 sec for Junior Entry)
