JOB TITLE: Marine Engineer

BUSINESS TYPE: Private, Marine Engineering

LOCATION: Brighton Marina, Brighton

SALARY: £25k - £30k DOE

HOURS: Full time, 40 hours per week [to include Saturdays plus out-of-hours callouts. Overtime available as required]

BENEFITS: 20 days annual leave + bank holidays [plus pension scheme and incentive programme based on performance following successful completion of probationary period]

You’ll be an integral part of the existing West Marine team providing all engineering maintenance and repair works. You’ll be expected to think on your feet and solve problems on a daily basis. You’ll need to be naturally independent, a good planner, and work well under pressure – whilst always being a team player! Experience in the leisure boating industry and will well known brands such as Volvo Penta, Yanmar, Mercury and Webasto is essential.


  • Servicing, diagnosing, repairing and maintenance of all marine engines within competencies

  • Travel to marina or dock where the vessel/job is located

  • Test the performance of marine engines and electrical systems

  • Carry out services and minor repairs on outboard, inboard, and commercial engines

  • Conduct plumbing and intake repairs, and troubleshoot engine and electrical problems

  • Replace broken or worn-out engine parts, carry out rebuilds

  • Repair faulty hydraulic and steering systems

  • Conduct electrical/AC system maintenance

  • Complete service records, timesheets, repair documents and reports

  • Carry out jobs as per job sheet and ensure all parts are checked before attending where applicable

  • Plan daily jobs and works diary throughout day for updates

  • Champion for the Company, its products and services

  • Cross-sell and upsell wherever possible (Volvo Penta Easy Connect, marine batteries, engine

    services, belts, coolant change, etc)

  • Carry out work to best of ability and full competence, and check completed work

  • Keep workspace clean, tidy and in line with Health & Safety on daily basis

  • Leave and return to workshop promptly and in accordance with business hours

  • Book out all parts removed from stock

  • Liaise with Parts & Warranty Manager to identify required parts for jobs, and source from stock or order from supplier as required

  • Discuss the results of jobs with Technical Manager with view to gain second opinion/advice/closure

  • Partake in regular Company Training, both internal and external, to ensure up-to-date practices and knowledge are maintained

  • Other tasks as required by Management


  • Previous and proven practical experience as a marine mechanic in the small boat leisure industry

  • Brand knowledge including Volvo Penta, Yanmar, Mercury/Mercruiser

  • Sound knowledge of marine engine and electrical auxiliary systems

  • Knowledge of marine hydraulic systems and related parts

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in confined spaces

  • Knowledge of boat steering systems

  • Good technology skills including computer use, notes writing, etc

  • Strong numeracy and literacy skills, with good English and Maths

  • Commitment to high quality workmanship

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Good problem-solving skills with an ability to prioritise workload

  • Excellent communication skills with a customer focused approach

  • Engineer performance diagnostic programmes and associated software, as per in-house training
  • Dealer & Supplier Portals, as per in-house training

  • Google Sheets, Docs & Shared Drive, as per in-house training

  • Attend external training as and when required

  • Marina Management Staff and Sub Contractors
