Type of Position: Permanent – Term Time Only (37 hours per week)


The Role
The cover manager is responsible for:
• Managing and organising cover for absent staff both teaching and non-teaching.
• Organising and providing induction and support for supply staff both teaching and non-teaching.
• Ensuring that safeguarding requirements and other relevant regulations are in place and adhered
to including the completion and recording of necessary checks.
• Managing and monitoring relevant budgets.
• The line management of all cover supervisors including their induction, training and appraisal.
To provide a high standard of care and education in a child-centred environment to pupils in KS3 &
KS4 in consultation and with guidance from the teachers.

 Take advantage of training courses and report back on the knowledge gained.
 To welcome, assist and support new members of staff/students.
Responsibilities:
Children:
 To manage a classroom, ensuring that students remain on task with the work they have been set
by an absent teacher.
 To be familiar with The Gatwick School ethos and approach through staff and subject handbook
and other relevant documentation eg policies.
 Be aware of health and safety risks and accountable for children at all times.
 Accept responsibility for working with groups of children and with the whole class when
appropriate eg Academic Mentoring.
 To discuss the child’s educational and emotional needs with the class teacher and to be available
for parents’ meetings, if necessary.
 To encourage an independent attitude towards learning and children looking after their own
belongings.
 To ensure safe supervision and an active role in playground duties in conjunction with other
colleagues as and when appropriate.
 To give comfort and security to children.
 To meet the individual learning, social and emotional needs of students on a day to day basis
which on occasions may necessitate breaks being taken at different times.
Learning Environment:
 Help to provide, maintain and take some responsibility for an aesthetically pleasing
environment, including displays.
 To help prepare the class ready for each day by setting out resources and tidying up equipment,
ensuring all resources are cleaned on a rota basis as appropriate.
 To respond to general enquiries ensuring messages are passed on appropriately and promptly.
