Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for qualified Staff Nurses to work in the Healthy Child Programme (HCP) 5-19 teams in West Sussex, offering support to children, young people and their families.

There are several posts available across West Sussex.

We are looking for individuals who have a strong interest in public health, early intervention, teaching and safeguarding, and who are effective communicators and team players.

You will be working as part of a 5-19 School Nursing team.

We offer a full induction programme, and a mentor to support your probation period. The service offers robust clinical supervision and staff development forums.

You will work closely with the six HCP 0-5 teams across West Sussex, and in partnership with schools, children and family centres, GPs, and the voluntary sector.

SCFT offers excellent support to staff, including training opportunities, e.g. gaining experience prior to applying for the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse course (Health Visitor or School Nurse) at one of our partner universities.

A high degree of flexibility and the ability to work independently are required; applicants must have a valid driving licence and the use of a car available for work.

Full and part time posts available. Flexible working patterns may be available.

Main duties of the job

To work with the Healthy Child Programme (HCP) team to provide a public health programme to children and young people aged 5-19, their families and communities.

HCP Registered Nurses will work in partnership with school nurses, health visitors and partner agencies in the identification and protection of vulnerable children and young people and contribute to the development of care plans, working in accordance with local and professional guidelines.

To promote the physical and emotional well-being of children and young people, in order to achieve the best start in life to establish good health for them now and in the future.

To make referrals as appropriate enabling access to relevant professionals; supporting children and young people to reach their developmental, personal and educational full potential.

To establish good links with children, families, schools, communities, statutory and voluntary agencies.

HCP Registered Nurses will support the training and education of colleagues and students gaining community Specialist Public Health Nursing experience to develop their own competence in mentorship as per NMC code of professional conduct.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Actively promote the health of children and young people by participating in the Healthy Child Programme (5-19yrs) as set out in the service specification

Within the 5- 19 service this will include the identification of health needs of school age children and young people within a defined caseload: planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care.

Within the 5-19 service provide specialist advice and information to children/young people, parents/carers, school staff and members of the multi-disciplinary team on health related issues affecting primary school age children.

To be flexible to a wide range of working environments including schools and children and families centres. Providing home visits to families as appropriate.

Keep accurate electronic clinical records in line with NMC guidelines and to enable statistical returns within defined timescales.

Support and contribute Early Help Plans

Working within own competence to review children's physical and emotional health including growth, immunisation history, nutrition and dental health, identifying health needs and offering appropriate follow-up

Provide evidence based health promotion advice on a range of subjects

Deliver identified training sessions. Facilitate group or individual public health sessions

Respond to child protection and safeguarding concerns & report appropriately following SCFT guidelines

To attend, contribute to and provide a report as appropriate at child protection conferences and planning meetings in line with SCFT safeguarding guidelines.

Contributing to the maintenance of equipment in line with medical devises policy.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
  • • Registered Nurse Qualification
  • • To hold or be willing to obtain Child Protection module


Desirable criteria
  • • Registered Children's Nurse
  • • To hold ENB 998 / Mentorship module, or be willing to obtain


Experience
Essential criteria
  • • Experience working with children
  • Experience of working within a community setting
  • Minimum 12 months post registration experience


Skills
Essential criteria
  • • Evidence of a range of clinical competencies appropriate for the role
  • • Commitment to lifelong learning and development


Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding Children Procedures
