Job overview

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust Estates Department provides a wide range of maintenance, operational and project management services throughout the Trust's community settings spread over a radius of more than 800 miles. The Estates department provides services to its own Trust and, via service level agreements (SLA's) to neighbouring Trusts and other local organisations.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a pro-active management team player willing to work flexibly and be part of a dynamic workforce to meet the challenges of an organisation that is very forward looking and has been awarded "Good" and "Outstanding" in some clinical services category by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

As an Estates Officer (Mechanical), the post holder will work alongside the other Estates Officer (Electrical) and be responsible for and provide guidance to the Team whilst ensuring the reliability of mechanical and engineering infrastructure, systems and equipment. The post holder will be accountable to the Estates Engineering Manager and will manage and lead a team of highly technical staff to provide an efficient, reliable (PPM) and reactive maintenance (RM) service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder though mechanically biased, will be expected to have some electrical experience as will be expected to provide cover as and when necessary. He/she must have proven track record and experience especially in water safety, medical gases systems and be able to provide guidance to the Team. He will also be expected to work alongside other Estates Officers, being a team player is therefore an essential pre-requisite of the post.

Essential criteria
  • Educated to post graduate diploma level or equivalent experience
  • BSc Degree in Engineering Discipline or equivalent+ specialist knowledge acquired through post graduate courses or equivalent experience
  • Certificate in Management Studies or Equivalent.


Desirable criteria
  • Full clean driving licence


Experience
Essential criteria
  • Broad experience in an Engineering maintenance function.
  • Extensive experience in operating a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Solid experience of providing technical guidance to trade staff.
  • Experience of people management.
  • Previous NHS Supervisory/management experience in a multi site organisation

  • Ability to communicate complex technical estates information to specialists and non specialists.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively with contractors and suppliers.
  • Good interpersonal and persuasive skills with the ability to motivate and mentor other staff.
  • Ability to undertake technical tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Able to organise and prioritise own workload and that of others.
  • Effective use of e-mail, and other MS office software.
  • Able to effectively manage maintenance projects
  • Ability to concentrate when preparing performance reports, investigating and resolving faults etc
  • Self-motivated; Able to work effectively in a pressurized environment
  • Ability to work on own initiative guided by NHS technical guidance (HTMs etc), legislation and health and safety requirements.
  • Logical approach to complex problem solving and sound understanding of legislation and codes of practice relating to engineering.
  • Detailed understanding of electrical and mechanical building services, plant and equipment. Technical background with knowledge of engineering building services
  • Knowledge of work place risk assessments
  • Working knowledge of planned preventative maintenance systems.
  • Ability to use fine measurement tools and electronic test equipment
  • Ability to deal with frequent requirement for light physical effort
  • Ability to effectively manager HR issues such as staff grievance, disciplinary or work performance issues
  • Ability to cope with dust, dirt, noise, smells etc when out on site e.g. supervising work, responding to operational incidents etc
  • IT literate and competent with experience of the use of Microsoft Word (or similar packages), databases, and Excel
  • A working knowledge of database systems, software and data analysis
  • Ability to work autonomously
