Community Staff Nurse / Registered Practitioner - Healthy Child Programme - 37.5 hours per week (full-time) Mon-Fri 9-5pm

An exciting opportunity is available for an MNC registered nurse or midwife to join our Healthy Child Programme (HCP) based in Crawley, West Sussex. The role will involve working with the 0-5 age group of children and their families, delivering public health messages in response to the early interventions agenda.

Main duties of the job

You will be working under the guidance of the Health Visitors and will receive support and training from the team and from the Practice Educators.

HCP West Sussex offer a service to the 0-19 population and includes Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (Health Visiting and School Nursing), Staff Nurses, Community Nursery Nurses, School Health Assistants and Administrators. The teams work closely with West Sussex County Council's Early Help service, and in partnership with schools, children and family centres, GPs, midwives and the voluntary sector.

The HCP service in West Sussex has achieved Gold Unicef Baby Friendly accreditation, so successful candidates will receive two days of infant feeding training, and will also have the opportunity to complete the promotional guides training and speech and language and communication training.

We are looking for an individual with a strong interest in public health, early intervention, teaching and safeguarding; an effective communicator who enjoys working as part of a team. A high degree of flexibility and the ability to work independently are required, and applicants must have a valid driving license and a car available for work.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main tasks
  1. Contribute to the work of the team under the direction of the team lead.
  2. Actively promote the health of children and young people by participating in the Healthy Child Programme as set out in the service specification.
  3. Facilitate students of nursing to develop their own competence as per NMC code of professional conduct.
  4. Submit accurate data and statistical returns within defined timescales and contribute to the maintenance of accurate computerised databases as requested.
  5. Initiate and contribute to Early Help Plans as per Healthy Child Programme under supervision of a named SCPHN.
  6. Within competence, review children's health, including growth, immunisation history, nutrition and dental health, identifying health needs and offering appropriate follow-up.
  7. Provide evidence based health promotion advice on a range of subjects.
  8. Deliver identified training sessions.
  9. Respond to child protection and safeguarding concerns & report appropriately.
  10. To attend, contribute to, document and report at child protection case conferences and planning meetings, making an assessment of risk with the supervision of the school nurse.
  11. To ensure health monitoring equipment is operating to a high standard, maintained and calibrated.


Person specification

qualifications
Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse or Midwife qualification
  • To hold or be willing to obtain Child protection Module


Desirable criteria
  • Registered Childrens Nurse
  • Evidence of academic study within last 5 years
  • Undergraduate degree 2:1 or above


Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to negotiate and manage conflict
  • Evidence of a range of clinical competencies appropriate for the role
  • Ability to identify difficult situations and act appropriately to obtain support
  • Good IT skills


Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding Children Procedures
