Time to Talk West Sussex is a high-performing IAPT service providing primary care mental health services to people with mild to moderate anxiety and depression. We are looking for an individual with excellent communication skills and knowledge who can offer support to patients so that they can return to work or achieve their employment goals. Joint working with a number of clinicians across a large geographical area is also essential to the role.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will maintain and develop relationships with other key providers in the West Sussex area in order to encourage joined-up provision. They will also advise senior management on measures that will develop the service provision.

You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills, focused on achieving positive outcomes. This is an exciting opportunity to develop and enhance your skills in a rewarding and dynamic environment.

The role is for 37.5 hours per week in our Coastal West Sussex Locality, which includes Worthing and Chichester areas. Your base will be negotiable but you must be willing to travel to all other areas across West Sussex when necessary.

  1. Time to Talk is an IAPT service providing Psychological Therapies within Primary Care to patients with mild to moderate mental health issues.
  2. The post holder will work closely with staff and patients to provide specialist information/advice to therapists in different localities within Time to Talk, as well as managing a caseload of people who have experienced mental health problems who are currently off work, struggling at work and/or who are unemployed and wish to return to work.
  3. The post holder will represent the service at key employment forums in West Sussex and be responsible for maintaining performance in relation to employment and alerting operational leads to excellent practice from other services, providing information and reports to the governance group in order to influence the employment strategy of the service.
  4. The post holder will work directly with all relevant stakeholders: Service users, staff, GPs, employers, Human Resources, Union Reps and Occupational Health, to enable service users to retain or gain employment.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main tasks
  1. To manage a caseload of patients who are currently off work / unemployed and who wish to return to work.
  2. To assess individuals support needs related to work which might typically include help with benefits, travel to work, graded return to work etc.
  3. To provide advice and guidance on employment related issues and signpost to mainstream provision where available.
  4. To work in collaboration with the client to plan a return to work and/or apply adjustments.
  5. To support the individual in resolving employment issues.
  6. To foster the client's optimism and self-confidence through the use of effective communication skills such as motivational interviewing and solution focused interventions.
  7. To provide specialist advice to colleagues on an ongoing basis.
  8. To be available to patients who require specialist input.
  9. To research good practice and cascade effectively to staff with support from management.
  10. To champion the importance of employment within Time to Talk.
  11. Analyse data and support the facilitation of relevant audits.
  12. To be fully integrated with the Time to Talk services, being responsible for those service users who want to obtain/return to employment and are referred for support.
  13. To co-ordinate regular meeting with Time to Talk colleagues with the aim of embedding the principle of early intervention, co-ordinating and integrating employment support into health treatment and sharing the outcomes of employment interventions.
  14. To effectively deal with a range of people with varying levels of understanding and knowledge and be able to manage sensitive information that may require careful skills of negotiation and persuasion.
  15. To design and present meaningful information in relation to employment and the performance of the service for a range of stakeholders, including employers, colleagues, service users or other aligned stakeholders.
  16. Where appropriate, taking and transcribing formal minutes, creating templates and sourcing information to upload to shared drive to assist therapists in their work.

Person specification

Qualifications
Essential criteria
  • Qualification in OT/Social Work/Probation/Nursing/Public Health/Therapist or other relevant profession - or equivalent experience


Experience
Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience working in employment support or similar sector
  • Experience of working with people who are experiencing difficulties with their employment.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of the issues surrounding work and the impact it can have on mental health / benefits & employment systems


Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within NHS or 3rd Sector


Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
  • An understanding of the principles of equal opportunities in relation to staff and patients
