Job Details

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Head of Health Centre (Lead Nurse), to start as soon as possible. This is a full-time, permanent role with a salary of £50,000 per annum.

The Health Centre provides an outstanding medical provision to both pupils and staff and is an integral part of the pupils’ pastoral care, providing exceptional care for their physical and emotional wellbeing.

The post-holder should be reliable, personable and able to communicate well with the Health Centre staff, pupils from the three schools of Brighton College from 3-18 years of age, College staff of all levels and visitors.

We are looking for a kind, collaborative and caring leader who will help focus on the overall wellbeing of our pupils.

Job responsibilities:

  • Provide any necessary nursing duties in the Health Centre. Looking after pupils in the three schools from Pre-Prep to Senior School age groups
  • Wound care, blood pressure and vital sign observations, child/adolescence travel vaccines
  • Chaperoning GP/pupil as necessary, within the GP practice hours at Brighton College Senior school
  • Working daily with different members of the nursing team. Having a relaxed and friendly demeanour, encouraging staff to ask questions and gain confidence
  • Having effective dialogue with all members of teaching and House staff, regarding pupil welfare, whilst keeping confidentiality as necessary
  • Day-to-day duties in the treatment room – administering prescribed CD’s, over the counter medication daily
  • Attend termly Health & Safety meetings, Boarding House Meetings, Safe Guard meetings, Committee Meetings etc.
  • Able to ‘counsel’ (actively listen) to pupils
  • Understand constraints for confidentiality and awareness of appropriate channels as needed
  • Emotional/psychological care of all pupils/colleagues
  • Care of the pupil with chronic conditions – asthma, type 1 diabetes etc.
  • Effective record keeping using the College system (iSAMS)
  • Writing and keeping care plans updated
  • Organising the weekend ‘Bank nurse’ shift rota
  • Ordering First Aid equipment and ‘over the counter’ medication, for use in all three schools
  • Ensuring all staff with First Aid certificates are all kept in date and organising ‘Refresher’ courses
  • Liaise effectively with other agencies regarding the booking of First Aid courses for all staff
  • Be willing to work the occasional evening or weekend shift to cover staff illness or when shifts are not able to be covered by Bank staff
  • Working and ordering stock within the constraints of the Health Centre budget.

  • Have a high standard of nursing care in accordance to the NMC Professional Code of Conduct
  • Accurate record keeping
  • Accountable for nursing decisions made with pupil care
  • Good leadership skills
  • Continued Professional development
  • Work efficiently with all members of the Health Centre staff
  • Attend study days as necessary, both mandatory and statutory to keep up with NMC PREP
  • Keep up to date with all Brighton College  Policies and work within constraints of all  policies
  • Management of nursing team. Assist with Appraisals and one-to-one meetings with nursing team
  • Policy writing and updating of policies annually
  • Provide advice and support to teachers and other staff e.g. EpiPen training, diabetes and asthma, infection control, and help with administration of school trips.

Health & Safety:

  • Must comply at all times with the College’s Health & Safety policies
  • Identify risks involved in day-to-day work and manage that risk
  • Ensure all staff continue to complete Brighton College ‘Accident Forms’ as necessary

Confidentiality:

  • Comply with the College’s data protection policy
  • Have the confidence to work autonomously and keep pupils’ confidence, but also know when to share knowledge with the College safeguarding team.
  • Aware of constraints of confidentiality.

Other recent additions include two new boarding houses, a state-of-the-art Music School and the Yeoh Building, a teaching building which includes 22 classrooms for maths, history, economics, politics and EAL, alongside an innovative Creative Learning Centre, opened in 2017.
