Job overview
We are seeking to appoint a full time Mental Health Act Trainer who will be responsible for the day to day provision of Mental Health
Act training in Sussex.
Main duties of the job
The job involves the preparation and delivery of Mental Health Act training to clinical groups and others across Sussex. Training will be delivered in a variety of different forums including face to face settings and using virtual platforms.

This post is for someone who has an established history of working competently and confidently with the Mental Health Act and associated legislation.
The successful candidate must have strong communication and presentation skills and the ability to present complex information in an easy to understand, accessible format.
The role will include researching and advising on legal matters relevant to the job role and participating in auditing.
This role may be of interest to someone who already works in a clinical or social work role with a good working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and who is considering moving into a training and development role.
Working for our organisation
The postholder will be a key member of the Mental Health Act senior team, working on projects with team colleagues. However the postholder must be self-motivated with the ability to work independently and reassess priorities on a continual basis.
The ability to travel to sites across Sussex is essential.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- In line with the agreed training plan, develop and deliver high quality relevant training and guidance for staff and partner organisations, as appropriate on application of mental health law and mental capacity law.
- Must have the ability to adapt the training content to meet the specific needs of the target groups (which includes, but is not limited to, SPFT CAMHS services, dementia services, Acute NHS Trust Emergency Departments and Junior Doctor Induction training).
- Maintain accurate training attendance and feedback records.
- Maintain the suite of training presentations, including archiving.
- Provide accurate, up to date and clear advice on the Mental Health Act, and related legislation, guidance, policy and practice to staff as required, and as appropriate within the banding.
- Taking responsibility for self-directed learning and development in order to maintain a thorough and up to date knowledge base in the Mental Health Act and associated guidance, regulation and case law.
- Undertake observations of Associate Hospital Managers as part of their review / re-appointment process and in line with the AHM observations/review protocol.
- Undertake project work as agreed with the MHA Service Manager.
- Responsible for ordering items as required using the Trust ordering system.
- Undertake any other duties at the request of the line manager which are commensurate with the role.

Essential criteria
- Certificate or equivalent level of demonstrable knowledge and experience /training in Mental health law or experience or relevant qualification.
- Education and Training qualification or willingness to complete.
Desirable criteria
- Certificate in Mental Health Law Policy and Practice

- Experience of working in the health and social care sector, delivering MHA training and advice
- Knowledge of key legislation: Mental Health Act 1983 how it interplays with other relevant legislation
- Up to date knowledge of the local and national agenda in relation to MHA issues.
- IT literate and competent in Microsoft applications
- Excellent verbal, written and presentational techniques
- Able to prioritise workload, including meeting deadlines under pressure
- Experience of delivering training to staff at all levels in both face to face settings and using virtual training platforms
