Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Leisure Duty Manager Apprentice for 18 months in duration.

As a Brighton College Leisure Duty Manager Apprentice, you will work as part of a team to ensure the Sports and Science facilities are prepared for use in accordance with the planned activity programme and that all areas are maintained to the highest possible standards of safety, cleanliness, security and operational effectiveness.

The apprenticeship programme is delivered through Functional Skills UK and covers:

  • Leisure Facility Management
  • Front Line People Management
  • Customer Service
  • Legal & Compliance
  • Business Support
  • Financial Responsibility

The role will prepare for and enable covering of Duty Manager shifts alongside obtaining a Level 3 Leisure Duty Manager qualification. As part of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will need to achieve the following qualifications:

  • First Aid at Work
  • Level 3 Pool Plant Operator Certificate

On successful completion of this apprenticeship the Leisure Duty Manager will be eligible to become a Member of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

Duties include:

  • Provide a professional and friendly welcome to all users.
  • Promote and provide an environment that is clean, safe and comfortable for all users.
  • Ensure timetabled sessions are set up and cleared away promptly.
  • Lifeguard swimming pool sessions and supervise dry-side sports activities (subject to successfully completing the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification).
  • Take pupil registers.
  • Cleaning duties as required on a day-to-day basis to achieve the highest standards of presentation, supported by the cleaning team.
  • Conduct regular building patrols to ensure cleanliness and safe use of facilities.
  • Manage and operate the swimming pool plant in accordance with the Operating Manuals to ensure appropriate dosing of the pool to maintain water quality.
  • Assist with the supervision of contractors with respect to health and safety, safeguarding, access and compliance documentation.
  • Be familiar with the College’s Health & Safety Policy and its application to all site facilities.
  • Any other reasonable management request.

On completion of probation, it is expected that Duty Manager shifts will be covered, which include the extra keyholding responsibilities as outlined below:

  • Ensure the building is opened and closed at scheduled times.
  • Ensure that all staff on duty are following the appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Ensure adequate lifeguarding of swimming pool sessions.
  • Liaise with the school facilities, grounds and cleaning departments to ensure the effective maintenance and cleanliness of the building.
  • Monitoring the safe and effective performance of the swimming pool through bacteriological monitoring, chemical monitoring, back-washing, plant and treatment monitoring.
  • Ensure routine maintenance, checks and inspections of plant, machinery and equipment are carried out (by others, where appropriate). Working closely with the Head of Sport and Science Facilities to achieve this.
  • Promptly investigate, document and report on any incidents or accidents.

  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation.

Desirable training:

  • National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ). If you do not already hold this qualification, we will pay for the postholder to complete this qualification. You will therefore need to have the ability to swim. The criteria for this is:
  • At least 16 years of age at the start of the course.
  • Able to swim a minimum of 100 metres on their back and front continuously.
  • Able to swim 50 metres in 60 seconds.
  • Able to dive to a depth of 3 metres.
  • Able to swim efficient breaststroke and have some knowledge of sidestroke.
  • Child Protection.
