Senior Project Engineer

Are you looking for a challenging new Senior Project Engineer opportunity? We are looking for great people who can help us redefine what's possible for our Capital Delivery team.

As part of our ‘Grow with Gatwick' initiative you'll be provided with the necessary development to ensure you're able to Grow with Gatwick.

The Construction Department comprises several programme and project teams, along with technical support functions and is accountable for the delivery of the airport CIP and strategic growth over the next 5 years, encompassing projects across the campus to deliver fit for purpose critical infrastructure.

What is the role?

The Senior Project Engineer will play a key role in Gatwick's future, leading the design management on of a developing programme of strategically important major building projects. The Senior Project Engineer will ensure that designs meet project requirements, whilst achieving value for money and will drive this behaviour through their team of Project Engineers. The Senior Project Engineer will manage the interface with external design consultants for the projects they are responsible for, and will ensure that this process is managed effectively, maintaining progress against an agreed schedule and managing the cost of the work carefully.

What will you do?

Lead design management across all projects within the assigned Programme.

Develop the project scope for all assigned projects to satisfy the business need and support the business case.

Develop the design brief for external design consultants, ensuring that the design contract is implemented and effectively managed through the design process.

Seek safe and cost effective design solutions to meet project requirements, working closely with Principal Engineers to align designs to GAL Engineering Standards or to agree concessions from the standards where required.

Manage external design consultants, ensuring that design outputs are reviewed, co-ordinated and meet quality requirements.

Define, in collaboration with the Asset Information Team and other stakeholders as required, the asset information requirements within the Employers Information Requirements for both design and construction contracts.

Monitor, coordinate and provide technical input to any design changes throughout the construction and handover stages.

Support the wider project team and CDM Advisor discharge Gatwick Airport Limited's statutory duties as a Principal Designer (where applicable).

Support the technical evaluation of potential contractors and consultants as required.

Support the continuous improvement of project delivery (including design management) processes and procedures and implements process improvements as these are developed.

Support the Programme Manager as required with stakeholder management to support the delivery of projects, having consideration for the balance between operational disruption and project costs.

Support the Field Engineer with management of safety and quality on site, ensuring that the construction on site aligns with the design and that quality testing meets necessary requirements.

Support the effective commissioning and handover of projects through review of as-built information, ensuring quality and completeness in what is delivered against contractual requirements.

Ensure compliance with all legal and statutory obligations applicable to this role, including all standards and code compliance and required planning permissions.

Lead the development of the assigned Field Engineer team; set standards, manage, motivate, coach and mentor staff within the team. Recognise talent and assist in the development of those with high potential.

Liaise with the Senior Field Engineer to co-ordinate effective and efficient delivery of project activities.

Do you have what we are looking for?

  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent in an Engineering discipline.
  • Qualifications - Chartered Member of a recognised Engineering Institution highly desirable.
  • Experience in engineering design or design management on large multi-year infrastructure projects with an individual project value typically in excess of £75m, including experience of leading small design management teams of up to 10 people and managing external design consultants.
  • Excellent understanding of construction techniques & constructability issues with respect to large building works.
  • Excellent understanding of Health Safety & Environmental issues associated with the Construction industry.
  • Good understanding of the importance of controlling and managing the project close out and handover process
  • Good understanding of monitoring the management of quality.
  • Good working knowledge of basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project etc.)
  • Knowledge and understanding of BREAAM, or other Green Certification schemes is desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding on managing new technologies that help reduce a building's carbon emissions is desirable.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NEC suite of contracts desirable. Experience of preparation of Project Manager Instructions and responses to Contractor Claims desirable.
  • Strong practical problem-solving skills.
  • Personal resilience and the ability to manage ambiguity
  • CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.
