Clerk

Clerk to Governors

Are you looking for a flexible role, where you predominately work from home and set your own hours? Then Balfour Primary, Hill Park and Peter Gladwin schools invite you to apply for the role of Clerk to Governors.

We are looking for someone to provide administrative support and advice on governance issues to the schools’ governing bodies. This would involve sending out notices/agenda of meetings, taking minutes, keeping records, dealing with relevant correspondence and maintaining governor databases.   Due to the nature of the post, the individual will also be expected to keep and respect confidentiality.

Previous clerking experience is not needed – full training will be provided. Far more important would be someone who is proficient in word processing and other PC applications, who has effective written and verbal communication skills, and who is highly organised.  However, experienced Senior Clerks are encouraged to apply and the successful candidate will be appointed on either the Clerk or Senior Clerk pay scale, depending on experience.

Whilst the successful candidate can work the majority of their hours flexibly on the days/times that suits them, there are a number of set meetings throughout the year that must be attended.  These take place after school, outside of normal office hours.  There are approximately 25 set meetings across the year.  There might also be the very occasional additional ad hoc meetings or panels.

It is important to understand that these are a notional number of working hours per year; therefore the hours per week will be flexible depending on the volume of work.  (e.g One week it may be half term so you may only need to work two (2) hours but the following week you have a couple FGB meetings so may work sixteen (16) hours.)  Across the course of the year it is expected that your total hours will be 468hrs and the salary reflects that.

If the successful candidate does not wish to take on three schools then the working hours could be reduced.  (e.g. if you would be unable to travel to Balfour Primary, the hours could be reduced from 9 to 6 and you would only support Hill Park and Peter Gladwin)

Hours: Part time - 9 hours per week (468 hours/year)

Salary: The starting salary is NJC scale 4a (£23,194 – £23,620 per annum, pro rata). The schools are prepared to appoint on the Senior Clerk scale for an experienced candidate – NJC scale 5 (£24,948 - £26,845 per annum, pro rata.)  Actual starting salary for a new Clerk would be £5,641.78.

Term:  Permanent

To apply: Please email application form (CVs will not be accepted) to recruitment@balfour.brighton-hove.sch.uk You can visit our website for job description and application form.

Please ensure that you write your application using the headings of the Person Specification.

Closing date: Friday 21st April 2023                 Interview date:  Friday, 28th April 2023

All three schools are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.  We welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to have a staff body that matches the social and cultural diversity of our student intake.
