Family Training and Navigation Worker

Could you offer information and support to parent carers of neurodiverse children and young people in Brighton and Hove and East Sussex?

Amaze are seeking to recruit to the following role:

Adviser – Family Training and Navigation Worker

  • 18 – 22 hours/week until end of March 2024, with the possibility of extension
  • Amaze hourly rate £16.57 – £17.09 (based on 35 hours week)
  •  Equivalent NJC 23-24 £30,149 – £31,099 pro rata
  • Flexible working: office-based (central Brighton) with option of some homeworking. Candidates will ideally live in East Sussex or Brighton & Hove, able to use Amaze’s main office in Brighton and travel across East Sussex when necessary
  • + 5% pension, annual leave pro-rata 26 days a year, + extra 3 days at Christmas + Public Holidays.

Other staff benefits include flexible, family and carer-friendly working, support for staff health and wellbeing, learning and development, and access to discounts schemes.

Amaze is a Sussex based charity that supports families with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Our Family Training and Navigation Service works with parents whose child is on the neurodevelopmental pathway (NDP) in Brighton and Hove and East Sussex, from when their child is first flagged as having autism, ADHD or another neurodevelopmental condition, through diagnosis and beyond. This NHS funded service is very much needed and in great demand.

You would be speaking direct to parents, helping them understand their child’s needs, how the pathway works, and what support and services they can use. Every call is different, but involve a mix of supportive listening, giving information, offering advice on things that are currently an issue and linking to workshops and groups for future support.

This is a great opportunity to use and extend your existing advice work skills in a friendly team. There will be opportunity to get involved in training and outreach work and in writing information resources if you have these skills or the potential to develop them.

You will be familiar with neurodiversity, a good listener, who can hold and share information. You will be an excellent and sensitive communicator, with sound organisational and recording skills. You will enjoy talking to all sorts of people and not be overwhelmed by hearing worries and distress (with the right support from your manager and colleagues).

We are committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity and to creating an inclusive working environment. We believe having a diverse workforce at all levels allows us to represent the communities we serve.

  • We want to employ staff who have lived experience of disability themselves and/or as a parent/carer of a child, young person or adult with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), and have an excellent understanding of the issues faced by SEND families
  • We particularly welcome applicants from Black Asian and minoritised ethnic communities.

The closing date for applications is 5pm Monday 19th June

The provisional dates for interviews are Monday 26th June

Company

Amaze is a local charity set up by parents of disabled children. Our mission is to inform, support and empower parent carers so they and their children can live happy and included lives. We are a one-stop shop offering information, advice and support for parents of children with any special needs. Our telephone helpline is an information and advice line for parents who would like to speak to someone who has an understanding of their situation. We produce a range of information for parents on paper and on line. We offer one to one help on education issues, claiming disability benefits and on transition to adult life. We run the Compass Card which gives cut-price leisure across the city. We run courses and events for parent carers. We get involved in consultation and development work to enable parents' voices to be heard by policy makers and service providers, and host the Parent Carers' Council, a city-wide group of parent carers that works to improve local services.
