SCIENCE TECHNICIAN (mainly CHEMISTRY)

Permanent and Full time

Term time Only (TTO) – 39 weeks per year

Required to start 15 April 2024

We are one of the top-performing colleges in the country, situated in the cosmopolitan seaside city of Brighton & Hove. Working here offers the combination of both a wonderful place to work and a great city in which to live. Our students and staff are colourful, aspirational and hard-working – which is perhaps why 96% of employees would “recommend BHASVIC as a good place to work” and many of our students go on to Higher Education.

BHASVIC is a Sixth Form College with around 3,000 students and 320 staff. You will join a vibrant college community with an informal working environment. The College is an open and friendly place to work, with staff that are very supportive of each other, and a range of benefits offered to ensure health and well- being.

We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced Science Technician to work mainly in our well-equipped and busy Chemistry Department. Some of the working hours would also be used to assist in the physics and biology departments. There may be some flexibility about daily start and finish times which can be discussed at interview; however there will be times when early morning and/or late afternoon working will be required.

You will need a Science degree in a Chemistry related subject or where Chemistry was a significant part of the course. Alternatively, you would need to be educated to GCSE, A - level or equivalent in a Science subject plus a good practical working knowledge gained from a minimum of two years relevant experience working in a laboratory or practical environment.

This is a permanent post, working 37 hours per week, 39 weeks per year (term time, September to July, plus 1 day pro-rata to be worked in the holidays).

You will be entitled to 5.6 weeks of holiday pay per year, which is paid in addition to your contracted 39 weeks. 5.2 weeks of holiday pay is included in your salary in twelve equal payments and an additional 0.4 weeks holiday pay will be paid to you in the December payroll each year.

The pro-rata salary for this post is £22,182 per annum, which includes 5.2 weeks of holiday pay. This is based on spine point 11 within grade 4 of the support staff pay spine, for which the full-time salary is £26,097 per annum. This will increase annually up to £24,266 (based on a full-time salary of £28,549 per annum) subject to satisfactory performance.

Company

We are a successful Sixth Form College, graded as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2012.

About 50% of our students come from Brighton and Hove, but many come from other state and independent schools throughout Sussex. The same variety of backgrounds, cultures and interests that make the Brighton area unique, also makes the College a lively, stimulating place to work.

There are approximately 2500 students on roll, of whom the vast majority (approximately 99%) follow Level 3 courses (mostly AS, A levels or BTECs) with the remainder following ESOL courses. The vast majority of our students are in the 16-19 age range, and following full-time courses. We have a strong local reputation for the academic success of our students and for our focus on individuals’ needs.

We are very proud of the achievements of our students and very much value the individual contribution that each of our staff make to our continuing success.  Our last staff satisfaction survey found that nearly 90% of staff at BHASVIC enjoyed their job.

The College is within walking distance of Brighton town centre, Brighton train station and is on a main bus route.  Please note that there is limited parking on the College campus and parking permits are allocated according to the distance you have to travel to work.

We offer a good package of employee benefits including:

  • A family friendly approach to help achieve a healthy work/life balance.

  • Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme for all our support staff.
