We are currently looking for a Safe Guarding lead to work across the board in an School based in East Sussex. The right person will be working in our SEND school and you will be required on a Long term basis as a Safe guarding lead. The role is to start ASAP. (You will need a DBS on the update service and satisfactory references)

Our young people have struggled in mainstream education and need a positive experience. The majority of pupils are on EHCP and have been diagnosed with ADHD and/or Autism and SEMH.

Purpose of the Role

The Operational Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is responsible for the day-to-day management, coordination, and implementation of safeguarding and child protection practices. Working closely with the Safeguarding Manager and leadership team, the postholder ensures that all pupils are protected from harm, that staff are well-trained and vigilant, and that the setting meets statutory and local safeguarding requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Safeguarding Leadership and Coordination
  • Act as the first point of contact for all safeguarding and child protection concerns within the provision.
  • Manage referrals to external agencies, including Children's Social Care, Police, and Early Help, in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and local safeguarding partnership procedures.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and secure safeguarding records on relevant systems (CPOMS).
  • Provide advice, guidance, and support to staff on child protection issues and the interpretation of safeguarding policies.
  • Liaise with parents/carers where appropriate and in the best interests of the child.
  • Attend and contribute to multi-agency meetings, case conferences, and reviews.
  1. Policy, Compliance, and Audit
  • Ensure the school's Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy is implemented effectively and updated annually.
  • Monitor compliance with safeguarding procedures and report to the Safeguarding Manager, Headteacher, and Governing Body as required.
  • Conduct internal audits and case file reviews to ensure high-quality record keeping and practice.
  • Contribute to Ofsted preparation and inspections, demonstrating effective safeguarding systems and impact.
  1. Training and Culture
  • Deliver and/or coordinate safeguarding induction and refresher training for all staff, volunteers, and contractors.
  • Promote a culture of vigilance, openness, and accountability, ensuring all staff understand their safeguarding duties.
  • Stay up to date with legislation, guidance, and local safeguarding developments, disseminating information to staff as appropriate.
  • Support staff wellbeing where child protection work is emotionally demanding.
  1. Supporting Vulnerable Pupils
  • Oversee and monitor support plans for pupils with safeguarding, welfare, or attendance concerns.
  • Work closely with pastoral, SEND, and behaviour teams to identify early signs of risk and ensure appropriate interventions.
  • Coordinate targeted safeguarding interventions and liaise with alternative education providers, social workers, and other professionals.
  • Advocate for pupils' safety and wellbeing, ensuring their voices are heard and acted upon in decision-making processes.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Qualified to Level 3 Safeguarding/Child Protection (or willing to undertake immediately).
  • Demonstrable experience working within a safeguarding role in education, social care, or youth provision.
  • Strong understanding of KCSIE, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and local safeguarding partnership procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.

Desirable:

  • Experience within an Alternative Provision or Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) setting.
  • Background in teacher, health or social work, pastoral care, or inclusion support.
  • Experience of multi-agency working and leading safeguarding casework.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and restorative practices.
