Electronics Engineer (Avionics / Legacy Systems)

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Electronics Engineer to join a specialist engineering team working on the maintenance, repair and overhaul of legacy avionics and electronic systems.

This hands-on role is ideal for someone with strong analogue electronics knowledge who enjoys fault finding at component level and developing bespoke testing solutions. You'll work on a wide variety of complex electronic assemblies, playing a key role in supporting repair activities while helping to improve engineering processes and testing capability.

Key Responsibilities

Fault Diagnosis & Repair

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot faults on analogue avionics systems and electronic assemblies.
  • Carry out component-level repairs including PCB fault finding, soldering and rework.
  • Repair wiring, connectors and associated electronic assemblies.
  • Replace obsolete or failed electronic components where required.
  • Work on a range of legacy systems including:
    • Flight instrumentation
    • Control units and panels
    • Navigation and gyroscopic equipment
  • Apply first-principles fault-finding techniques where technical documentation is limited or unavailable.

Test Equipment Design & Validation

  • Design and develop bespoke test equipment and test rigs to support repair activities.
  • Define test methods, architecture and acceptance criteria.
  • Build, commission and maintain test equipment using appropriate instrumentation.
  • Validate repaired equipment against functional and performance requirements.

Circuit Analysis & Reverse Engineering

  • Analyse analogue circuits to understand functionality and identify failure modes.
  • Interpret circuit diagrams, wiring schematics and technical manuals.
  • Reverse engineer electronic assemblies where documentation is incomplete.
  • Reconstruct system functionality to support repair and testing activities.

Documentation

  • Produce detailed engineering documentation including:
    • Strip and build reports
    • Test procedures
    • Fault reports
  • Develop test plans where OEM documentation is unavailable or insufficient.
  • Ensure all engineering work is fully documented and traceable.

Skills & Experience

Essential

Strong background in analogue electronics.

Proven experience of component-level fault diagnosis and repair.

Ability to read and interpret circuit diagrams, schematics and wiring layouts.

Experience with PCB repair, soldering and electronic rework.

Competent using electronic test equipment including:

  • Oscilloscopes
    • Multimeters
    • Signal generators
    • Spectrum analysers
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
