Geography Teacher:

Varndean School requires an enthusiastic, committed and outstanding teacher of Geography to start in September. This is a permanent full-time position.

This is a great opportunity for a skilled and passionate teacher to become part of a well-established, highly collaborative and successful team.

The busy, productive and highly effective geography department is at the heart of the school’s curriculum (both in and out of the classroom) and there will be extensive opportunities for the new appointee to develop professionally and contribute to helping the department fulfil its ambitious academic agenda.

Varndean is an excellent place to work. Ofsted in 2022 described the “inspirational leaders” , the “expert” teachers, “impressive” pupils and the “exceptionally strong” staff training.

We hope you will be interested in joining us. If so please complete the application form and send/e-mail it, with a covering letter to Hannah Butcher, Deputy Headteacher, Varndean School vacancies@varndean.co.uk.

The closing date is 5pm on Monday 15 June. Early applications are encouraged as the school reserves the right to interview excellent candidates in advance of this date.

Varndean School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

We welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to have a staff body that matches the social and cultural diversity of our student intake.

The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.

What Geography at Varndean Offers You:

The Geography Department at Varndean School has recently celebrated nationally outstanding results, with over 75% of students achieving a grade 4+ and 34% of students awarded grades 7-9.

We are a forward thinking and innovative team, who are committed to building a holistic programme of study for our students. Our 5 year spiral curriculum is well established and supported with a range of resources, including our own dedicated website and bespoke GCSE interventions.

We are proud of our extra curricular offerings and are constantly seeking ways to improve this further. This academic year we are running GCSE fieldwork trips to the FSC Juniper Hall for nearly 100 Year 10 students, further supported by day trips into the surrounding areas such as Seaford and Cuckmere Haven.

We also run an annual enrichment trip. This year we are visiting Naples, where students will have the opportunity to explore themes from their physical Geography studies, including Mt Vesuvius. Previous locations have included Iceland, Sicily and Mt Etna and the Azores, New York, and Croatia and Slovenia.

As a member of the Geography Department, you will have the opportunity to develop your own pedagogical contributions to the curriculum and further your own leadership skills and career ambitions. This includes the support to complete a range of NPQs and access to a plethora of CPD from our partnership with TTSA.

Housed together with the wider humanities department, you will find the team a welcoming, supportive and highly collaborative environment to work in and belong to.
