An overview of the technician role

Job Title: Technician

Supporting ELTs (Emergency Locator Transmitters)

ELT Inspection & Functional Testing: Carry out receipt inspection, visual checks, and functional tests on fixed and portable ELTs, including 406 MHz burst verification and 121.5 MHz homing tone checks using approved test equipment.

Battery Replacement & Lifecycle Control: Replace ELT batteries in line with OEM instructions; track battery life, shelf-life, and next-due dates; ensure correct torquing, sealing, and re-arming procedures are followed.

Programming & Protocol Verification: Program and verify 406 MHz identification data (HEX ID/24-bit aircraft address/registration as applicable); confirm country code and COSPAS-SARSAT protocol compliance; produce and file programming printouts.

Labelling & Release Paperwork: Update labels (programming, next battery due, test due), complete work packs and test reports, and prepare release documentation in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.

Service Bulletins & Configuration Control: Review and action OEM service bulletins and product notices; ensure configuration and part-number control is maintained for each ELT model/variant.

Test Equipment Care: Handle, calibrate (via approved routes), and maintain ELT test sets, RF attenuators, power meters, and programming interfaces; log calibration due dates.

Goods Handling & Safety: Handle lithium battery consignments in accordance with company procedures; observe RF exposure, ESD, and general safety protocols during testing and storage.

Customer Support: Assist with customer queries on ELT programming, battery due dates, and regulatory best practice; prepare simple quotations for ELT battery changes, tests, and replacements.

ELT-Relevant (Preferred/Trainable):

  • Awareness of 406 MHz COSPAS-SARSAT concepts and 121.5 MHz homing principles.
  • Familiarity with basic RF measurements (power, frequency, VSWR) and use of ELT test equipment and programming tools.
  • Understanding of battery life tracking and documentation for safety equipment.
  • Basic awareness of handling/packing lithium batteries in line with company procedures.

Additional Responsibilities

Repair and Maintenance: Assist senior technicians in diagnosing and repairing electronic issues with aviation headsets, leads, and adaptors, following established procedures and guidelines.
New Build Process: Learn and support the new build process for aviation equipment, including assembling and testing components to ensure proper functionality and quality.
Soldering: Develop basic soldering skills under the supervision of experienced technicians, practicing precision soldering techniques and adhering to safety protocols.
Reading Technician Drawings: Gain familiarity with technician drawings and schematics, learning how to interpret technical specifications and identify components and connections.
Quality Assurance: Participate in quality assurance activities, assisting with inspections and testing to ensure that repairs and new builds meet manufacturer specifications and industry standards.
Documentation: Maintain accurate records of repair and maintenance activities, documenting work performed, parts used, and testing results in accordance with established procedures.
Workshop Support: Assist with general workshop duties, including equipment maintenance, inventory management, and maintaining a clean and organized work area.
Training and Development: Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance technical skills and knowledge, actively seeking opportunities for learning and growth.

Qualifications

Hours 37.5 a week
