Mathematics Teacher - Maternity Cover

Varndean School requires an enthusiastic, committed and outstanding teacher of Mathematics to start in January 2027. The role is offered on a fixed term basis for a year.

The busy, productive and highly effective Mathematics department is at the heart of the school’s curriculum and there will be extensive opportunities for the new appointee to develop professionally and contribute to helping the department fulfil its ambitious academic agenda.

This is a great opportunity for a skilled and passionate teacher to become part of a well established, highly collaborative and very successful team.

Varndean is an excellent place to work. Ofsted in 2022 described the “inspirational leaders”, the “expert” teachers, “impressive” pupils and the “exceptionally strong” staff training. We hope you will want to pursue an application further and you are welcome to make a pre-application visit to the school.

If you are interested in this role, please submit an application form and short covering letter to Hannah Butcher, Deputy Headteacher vacancies@varndean.co.uk.

The closing date is 9am on Wednesday 21st October 2026. Early applications are encouraged as the school reserves the right to interview excellent candidates in advance of this date.

What Mathematics at Varndean Offers You:

The Mathematics department comprises a team of highly skilled practitioners. We work in a collegiate style which draws on the expertise of all in delivering a challenging and creative curriculum. We have maintained outstanding results at GCSE for over 6+ years with above national average results.

We offer a curriculum across the five year journey which is carefully structured to teach the skills and techniques needed to expand students' understanding and knowledge. A fundamental part of this is the bespoke nature of the delivery.

The idea that every child can be included and become successful is at the heart of the curriculum and pedagogy in the Mathematics department.

The team works tirelessly to ensure that barriers to education are broken down and that students are not restricted by prior attainment or low expectations.

The department has thought at individual level about each student, delivering the next stages for them through effective planning, student in class self-marking and CPD. This is reflected in the progress that students make and the pride they take in their work.

The guiding principle of all planning in the department is that every child should receive such high quality teaching that they make their best possible progress. This embraces the diversity of the students’ needs and looks not to add to teaching but to refine the teaching so that it provides for all.

Varndean School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of

children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this

commitment.

We welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to have a staff body that matches the social and cultural diversity of our student intake.

The successful candidate will be subject to a DBS check. The school welcomes applications from all sectors of the community.
